What you also can take away from this is that even though the customer has already paid for the Windows license that dosen't matter if KIP's hardware fails. The customer is still stuck with paying again if they would like to continue to use the printer.

As you've seen, this comes down to company policy. For instance, with a Microsoft Windows computer and an OEM license, if the 'main components' of that computer are replaced, you technically have to buy a new license, since it's a 'new' computer. However, Microsoft realizes the silliness in this, and will usually renew the codes out of Good Will. It's up to KIP if they wish to do the same...

I know the original post is old but I just found out about the " $1195 Kip Code Ransom "
I don't service many Kip's but have a 7170 that needs the Key code. Just posted on this forum about it a few days ago.
This really stinks and will hurt Kip in the long run. My customer with the 7170 said they will never buy a Kip again!

It's like buying a used car and when you go to register it you can't find the VIN, Call the dealer and they tell you it's extra $1195 for the VIN !! Just wrong!

All they are doing is pushing dealers to Pagewide. This extortion will be part of Kip's demise....
