Just finished tearing down a developer housing for a lite copy problem. I deglazed the developer roll and cleaned the supply roll. Dumped the toner vacuumed the whole housing and installed fresh toner and did the tone up procedure.

The copy was lite pretty much across the page. After the cleaning it looked better and then began to get lighter on the right (outboard) side. Out of desperation I ran the 398 code which puts toner from the from the hopper to the sump. Copies were beautiful but I know I am overloading the sump to get this quality. The machine won't maintain this level of toner it eventually runs down to a normal level and copy begins to go light. It seems like a supply roll problem. Any thoughts appreciated.

Was it light before you refurbed the dev. unit? If you cleaned the dev. and supply rollers, I don't think your issue is with them, especially if you say that you ran the 398 and got "beautiful" prints. What is the 398 code, I've never heard of it and I don't think it's in the manual. Is it the same as the 99? I would look more towards the toner sensors, they work to let the printer know to add toner to the machine, they could be sending false signals telling the printer that there is toner when in actuality, there isn't. That might be why you had to run the 398 code.

Yes the copy was lite, 398 is the hopper to developer motor. There seems to be sufficient toner in the housing when the copy is running light

Mike,
Did you resolve this or are you still having the issue?

Yes I did, sorry for not getting back to the group. Very simple and basic. The customer moved the machine recently. Overloading the developer sump with toner was just putting more toner at the light side. Then a light bulb went off to check machine level. That did the trick. It was a good half inch off side to side. Back to basics.

That should be a charge call. Good job.
