Good day fellow techs. Got a call from a customer today. I have not ran the call yet, and since I have not ran across this one yet, I figured I'd check here. They report that their 1880 will not load paper. I had them turn off the mach and load paper. Had them leave the door open and bypass the switch. The mach immediately drives the paper in the reverse direction till the mach reads out of paper. Same with the sheet bypass. Any ideas.

You have paper from a jam on a sensor. It's reversing so I'd say the second one in.

Most likely the forward roller is worn and slipping as the paper drives. As the paper loads and backs up, it looks for a set number of clock pulses. If the paper skips across this roller, the clock pulses skip. This is a very common issue with this model. A little trick you can try is to pick up some brake fluid and clean the roller with that. This is an old used car salesmans trick. Put a quart of brake fluid in the crankcase of a leaking engine and the brake fluid swells the rubber. then no leaks, for a while anyway.

Make sure you clean the roller with alcohal after the brake fluid. Or, you could just replace the roller. This would be my reccomendation.

Add some electrical tape to the centre black roller. This will increase the diameter and increase pressure against the paper. Then when the paper rolls back it will stop. This is common especially with new rolls of paper that have a lot of weight behind them. When the brake stops the roller there isn't enough friction and the paper slides through.

On a top of everything that is said above. I found one of the causes that can contribute to this problem is a loosen screws in a paper spindle. Which causes to sag a bit under weight of a new roll. I usually tighten them down with the thread locker.

the electrical tape works........make two lengths 8" long. stick tape length(one at a time) to the bottom of the roller, lined up with outer edge, and turn roller counter-clock-wise.
