Most of the low end KIP printers left are running XP embedded. I’ve always been under the impression that XP embedded is pretty much immune to virus’. At least that’s what KIP says. Do you think XP embedded is vulnerable to a hacking attack? I’ve heard that some people are running some sort of antivirus on their KIP printers, but it appears that doing so slows the print process because the onboard computer isn’t very robust.
Do you think placing a Win 7 computer next to the printer, to act as a print server, would provide additional protection? Is it worth doing?
Or should we just hunt down these people and remove their ability to create this sort of havoc........ _________________ Regards,

The engineering of XP Embedded does help mitigate attacks by not installing a full OS. A lot of the exploits that these attacks use are not enabled on the KIP.
Unfortunately, no OS is 'immune' to a virus or a hack.
Using a print server won't help with 'ransomware' attacks. These attacks are usually triggered by a user and don't come directly from an outside attack.
If one were to hit your customer, the KIP would be the least of their worries. You could just re-ghost it and be back up and running in a matter of minutes. Meanwhile, the rest of their network would be FUBAR. _________________ **************************************

I guess "immune" was a poor choice of words. Thanx for the input, a very lucid explanation. BTW, glad to see you still have a pulse, haven't seen you here lately. _________________ Regards,
