Seems like this problem is getting worse. Using the 7.2.348 or the latest 7.4.817, On various models of KIP 700m, 7100, 3000 etc the controller stops communicating with the printer for no apparent reason and you won't see the roll size info or sq ft meters.
Have to do a complete ghost using DVD to correct. Tried all the usual deleting of LOG files, deleted the files in the TU, TS, TC folders on D Monpath 1 , Deleted the Request folder files and joblist .dat etc with no luck.
Only fix seems complete re- ghost with DVD.

Any other suggestions??

This is getting old!

Seems like failing hard drives to me. I would replace the drives (they are inexpensive enough) and then ghost it and see how it goes.

Tried that
It helps but not the answer as to why it happens and how to fix it without a reghost from the Kip DVD.
I have had it corrupt again within days of replacing the HDD!

Reading this again....how do you know the drive is corrupted?

Where do you see that the controller can no longer communicate with the printer? Is this on the touchscreen? Or is this just from a workstation through Request/Print?

Do you know if Unattend is running in the background when this happens?

When this happens is Unattend still running?
I would try doing a check disc on the C&D drives and have it automatically fix errors. That fixes a bunch of issues.

No unattend is not running and won't start even if you go to start programs.
Tried check disc as well.
Only thing that works is complete reghost.
I have had this problem with different customers and different models using the 7.2.348 or any of the 7.4.694 or .817
I believe a power surge causes it but it's a pain to have to reghost from scratch.
Must be an easier way to fix????

The only thing you can try is run command prompt then run the following:

CHKDSK /R

Reboot of course as it's the main disk.

If it will fix then this will fix it. If not you must ghost.

Possibly a bad Power Supply, Motherboard or Hard Disk.

Should fix but in many cases CHKDSK /R will fix.

You can run CHKDSK /F but the CHKDSK /R runs /F also.

Good luck.

If Unattend isn't running, there is a connection problem between the IPS (controller) and the printer. This has nothing to do with the HDD or a corrupted OS.

There are several things to try to troubleshoot this, but it isn't easy to describe in this forum.

Are there any errors showing on the printer?

To me, it seems very strange that this is happening on so many printers and so often. I would start to look at the printer to see if there is anything happening on that side.

You could set HardwareConnect=True in the Winuntd.ini to HardwareConnect=False.

If Unattend opened up after making this change and rebooting then it would point to an issue with connection to the printer.

In which case you could further diagnose.

It does indeed seem odd you say you are seeing this on multiple machines.

Are all these machines in the same location?

No different locations and customer. Usually have had this problem due to power failure during a electrical storms etc.
BUT did find out the Kip at this location is sharing one outlet with a Xerox copier via a surge strip!
Sent my guy there today to get power issue resolved.
But appears it's corrupt again and the only thing that I have found to correct this is a Re ghost with DVD!

Morning Al
Has anyone monitored the voltage at the wall? Is the printer on a line filter? If the Kip is sharing an outlet with another copier it could be a voltage drop caused by an overload condition, not enough to pop the breaker but enough to cause a "brown out".

Mark makes a good point.

I actually had a similar situation with brown power on a KIP ips5000.

The only thing that fixed it was to unplug it from one side of the room and plug it in the other side of the room.

For some reason the power wasn't good on that side of the building. I remember having to ghost that machine multiple times.

I don't know if there is a way to run the initial machine setup on the IPS controller once it's up and running.

I know when you ghost the machine it runs this installation and puts all the correct drivers and ini files in place.

If someone knew how to invoke the initial machine installation on an already running controller; That would save a lot of time.

You would think something like that should work. But I have never tried it.

If you are really having this much trouble in your neck of the woods you might consider running the controllers on your equipment off a UPS Backup. It should eliminate this issue from happening all the time.

We have done this on a few systems over the years with customers that have bad power. It works well.

Just make sure you check the Power Supply on the IPS PC and make sure it's set to 110/120 V when you plug into a UPS.

If the power supply is autoswitching this won't matter and it will adjust to your input power.
