Hey guys,
The display on my scanner to my 9800 was slowing getting dimmer and dimmer and has now completely faded away. Is there something that causes that or is it simply the display itself?
Thanks,
David |

Replacing the screen always solved the issue for me. _________________ Regards,

Display issue like Mark said.
This is on my to do list for repairable items. I believe a reflow would resolve the issue as it does on many matrix displays like this one. _________________ "The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten." - Benjamin Franklin and John Ruskin |

Reflow is simply to heat the soldering to the point of flow. Not beyond this as going beyond will cause the solder to detach.
Example here. Although I don't recommend using a heat gun as you cannot control temperature.

No kidding, and that will make the LCD screen useable. Go figure. _________________ Regards,

Very cool. Thanks James. I will give it a try. So it just seems to be a ribbon cable connection problem.
thanks,
David |

James,
I just took one of the displays out of the scanner but no ribbon cables to reflow. It does have a long tube like thing that runs along the edge of it that has a plug connector. Just wanted to throw this update at you to see if you had any other thoughts that I could try.
thanks,
David |

The long tube I believe is a fluorescent back light. You are correct there is no ribbon cable. I believe instead from memory there's solid connectors.
I will have to look at one again to jog my memory. _________________ "The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten." - Benjamin Franklin and John Ruskin |

Maybe the large black plug connector get cold solder joints. Just seems strange that the whole thing would go dimmer and dimmer. Right now you can barely see it but it is faintly there.

I'm not sure how these work so I don't know where the light comes from. Anyway, my pistons that I got from you should be in soon and it looks like I might be buying a display next unless you have a way for me to try to get this one to light up again. |

I have some displays for 9800 scanners. I just don't know if they have lines through them or not.
I have two scanners that haven't been torn down yet.
Just let me know. _________________ "The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten." - Benjamin Franklin and John Ruskin |
