Can you replace a white box 3000 with a 3100 controller? And, if so, can you still use the IF board from the 3000?
I am aware of the modification to the 3000 cabinet for the black boxes but wanted to know what other issues I might have to include new keycodes.
BTW, was told by a manufacturer that a 3100 controller in a 1050xxx 3000 would not work. |

It is my understanding that the interface cards are different, therefore it is not interchangeable. The keycodes would never work. |

There really shouldn't be any reason why the 3100 controller won't work in a 3000. An I/F card is usually backwards compatible, but sometimes not forward compatible; meaning that you can take a 3100 or even a 5000 I/F card and control a 3000. It is the speed that the I/F card that is key. So long as the printer the card came from is faster (mm/sec) than the printer it is driving you should be fine.
However, there are caveats to this as usual. The I/F card is a proprietary card that is tested on the latest IPS chipset. Again, latest/newest I/F card should work on an older IPS, but usually not the opposite.

You could try putting in the IF card in the newer IPS printing a build sheet and sending it KIP and they should be able to give you new keycodes. |

I would like to get this verified by someone, I spoke to Kip about 6 months ago about using a 3100 controller in a 1050 version 3000 and they told me no, so if you do try this, please post the outcome, it could have saved me twice if Kip fed me a line. |

seems to me that if KIP unlocked the proprietary information, that someone could come up with a solution and keep the white box 3000 printing.
Seems to me that KIP could compile an older version (7.2) their software bypassing the requirement to match mac addresses for older machines while still requiring keycodes to print, copy, scan and for pdf. |

Considering KIP EOL'd the product it's unlikely they will re-write any code.... _________________ Regards,

I would also love it if Microsoft would unlock their proprietary information on Windows 98 and Apple should also unlock their proprietary information on Mac OS 9, I could still play Kings Quest and Leisure Suit Larry.... _________________ **************************************

Interesting comments about proprietary software.
Would you buy a car knowing it might not run in 7 years without the original proprietary part the manufacturer does not chose to make available?
go ahead and beat me up on this. The probability is that KIP could make a solution available and apparently does not chose to do so. You all have Clients out there you could help... but only if KIP chose to help.
Back to original post: can a 3100 controller work with a 3000? Some say yes and KIP says no. |

no sense in twisting words as no one suggested the manufacturer provide all their proprietary data; just enough to keep a good machine printing. BTW, KIP will not make money off a dead machine - nor will you except parting out.
as a professional, I often make proprietary data available to other professionals and to end users, sometime for a fee. I stay in business like most of us by providing good customer service for a fair price. |

palmerhg, no point turning this into a pissing contest. Maybe KIP software support would be a better place to send your questions. Or you can send them to me and I'll ignore them like KIP will......... _________________ Regards,
