I have a customer with a 2003 that had a problem connecting to the network, the last tech changed the IP address and according to her notes, that fixed the problem. Now the customer says it keeps dropping off the network. Would it be a bad IF Card causing this?

Does the printer print? If yes, then not an I/F card problem. I am not sure why this would even be thought of.

How do you know the printer is dropping off the network? Are you able to ping the printer? If you hook up an external monitor, keyboard and mouse are you able to ping anything from the printer out?

I have seen so many instances where an "IT Department" would issue an IP address to the KIP and somehow another computer on the network; e.g. a remote user comes to the office with a laptop and then connects to the network. The laptop and KIP have the same IP address.

I would start by looking at the KIP with an external monitor and see what is happening on the printer itself. Check if it has an IP address, check to see if there is a link light on the NIC. Start by troubleshooting the network and network interface for the KIP.

Yes, some IT dept. are great thinkers. Just got back from a call where the customer got a new computer and the user (a 62 year old gentleman, that's worked at this company for over 40 years) got confused because when he goes to print a drawing, the KIP wasn't showing up as his selected printer. They called me and said that their IT dept went through it and says it's a KIP issue. So I went out there and the issue was that they did not select the KIP as his default printer.

Anyways, Tinne73, easiest way to check if you have a IP conflict is to unplug the KIP from your network and ping the IP address. If there is a reply, that means there is another device sharing the same IP. If your KIP was turned off and another device in your company is set to DHCP, it might have picked up the KIP, then obviously, when you turn on the KIP, that is when there is a conflict. This happened recently to me and the other device that picked up the KIP's IP was someone's cell phone. Have your IT dept take the IP of the KIP and "reserve" that IP on the server so that it cannot be picked up by another DHCP device when the printer is turned off. THAT'S IF THIS IS EVEN YOUR ISSUE......

Not at all..LOL. I didn't want to get into too much detail, (seems that was already too much..haha.). This guy is a machine operator for the past 40 years and they now have him in the tool crib office printing schematics and tool blueprints and he hates using this "new" technology...that's what I meant...sorry, no disrespect to you older folks..haha.
