I went to the Print 13 show to see the new KIPs and the new Memjet machines (Xerox IJ 2000 and the Oce or Canon CW 900).
The two Memjet machines just are not going to make in our industry.
They tell you that it will do around 15 "d's" per minute, but the have to pause after 15 prints to clean the print heads and this takes a minute and a half to do. So the C7800 is faster.
The other major flaw is that it will not print black on 20# bond, the best it can do is a medium grey color. The paper has to be coated in order to print black and this just blows the cost way up.
In the Xerox booth they said that they are not even going to go after the AEC market and are presenting it as a poster machine, but with only dye inks good luck with that.
The technology is cool but I don't think we have to be worried about these machines storming into the market.
The CW900 was a disaster all the way around, streaking and jamming.
Rumor has it that Canon is pushing back the release date another 6 months. |

Thanks for the update, I was pretty much expecting exactly what you witnessed. Color wide format printing is not that easy of a task to complete cheaply. |
